Practical Espionage for the Solo Traveller
A downloadable short story
Practical Espionage for the Solo Traveller is a frustrated missive from a spy whose mission is not going according to plan.
It’s one of the things they teach you in this line of work: how to be present in a conversation without paying any attention at all. My brain has reverted to the basic state they use as the blueprint for neural networks. I perform pattern recognition on everything you say and respond with a stock phrase or two that I think will keep you convinced. Did I pass the Turing Test? At one point I made a joke about the weather and you laughed like you’d never heard anyone observe that it always rains when they’re planning a picnic, so I think I must have passed. Or you were just being polite, but I would have noticed that. After all, it takes one to know one.
